Stainless Steel Marine Fasteners - corrosion resistant

Here at Marsh Fasteners, we guarantee that our stainless steel marine fasteners are corrosion resistant? But what exactly does that mean? Simply put, it means the stainless steel alloy that we use in our marine fasteners has been specifically crafted so that, when exposed to harsh environments like the ocean, the fastener won’t rust.

FAQ's

What are marine grade fasteners?
Marine grade fasteners refer to fasteners that have been designed specifically for the marine industry. In other words, they are strong and entirely weather/corrosion resistant.
Marine grade stainless steel refers to a particular kind of steel that has Molybdemun added into is. This alloy means that the steel is completely resistant to corrosion such as rust, making it the ideal choice in a salt water environment.
What are the benefits of fine-threaded fasteners over coarse-threaded fasteners?
This will depend on your preferences, however, having said that, fine threaded fasteners are generally stronger in tension and shear. They will be less likely to loosen over time, they allow for finer adjustments and they are more easily tapped into harder materials.
What is the difference between 18-8 and 316 stainless steel marine fasteners?
Both are of a high-quality. However, 316 stainless steel marine fasteners are generally more resistant to corrosion than their 18-8 counterparts.

Am I using the right grade of stainless steel fasteners on my boat?

A well rounded boat will have the correct fastener for the job. This means you’ll have different fastners for different application on your boat. A good rule of thumb is that for deck components, austenitic stainless steel grades should be satisfactory, whereas for submerged components you’ll want the Molybdemun infused stainless steel fastners

What types of bolts, screws, and nuts should I use to prevent corrosion?

Stainless steel bolts, screws, and nuts are sure to provide you with the best possible long-term corrosion resistance. For above water conditions, austenitic stainless steel grades 1.4401, 1.4404 and 1.4542 will be sufficient but for anything that is to be submerged you want at least 6% Molybdenum in the alloy.

How do I choose the right fastener for my boat?

Before making this all-important decision, you must know how heavy the load will be that the fastener has to be able to handle. Having said this, it is essential to remember that the best choice is almost always fasteners of the same material as the components being joined.

Do stainless steel fasteners corrode when coupled with aluminum?

Yes. As a result, this pairing is usually best avoided.
When stainless steel comes into contact will aluminium in the presence of an electrolyte (like saltwater) a galvanic corrosion process starts. The best way to avoid this is to keep stainless steel with itself and it will literally last a lifetime.
